So was the lichen.

Orange and yellow crusts working the edge of a white quartz boulder.

It is not a plant. It is a fungus and an alga living as one organism, and it is dissolving the stone it sits on — the first step in making soil. Crustose lichens grow on the order of half a millimetre a year. A patch the width of your hand has been at it for roughly a century and a half.
