Somebody carved a bird into this cliff.

The bird is still here.

A stick nest on honeycombed sandstone at White Mountain, north of Rock Springs near the Killpecker dunes.

Golden eagles return to the same nest for generations, adding to it every season. Researchers have linked the thunderbird carvings on these cliffs to aeries still in use — the people who made this rock art were watching birds nest in this same stone. The nest gets heavier every year. The cliff gets lighter: the leading explanation is salt crystallizing inside the sandstone and pushing grains loose, while the hardened outer shell erodes far more slowly, which is what leaves those pockets and undercut lips.
