Ice did, one winter at a time.

A heart-shaped block held in split red stone, lichen working the edges.

Water gets into a seam, freezes, and expands about nine percent — enough to widen the crack. Repeat for a few thousand winters. The shape is not a message. It is arithmetic that happened to land. I went back the next season and it had let go over the winter. This photograph is the only thing left of it.
