A pine seedling in a seam on a granite boulder, dead needles caught in the crack around it.

There is no soil up there. The roots are in trapped needles, grit, and whatever the lichen has broken down. As those roots thicken they push the seam wider — so the tree is slowly prying apart the only thing holding it up.

- Dust gently with a dry cloth. For a mark that will not lift, a barely damp cloth, then dry.
