It waited its whole life for this.
Then it was finished.
A golden stalk of split seed capsules still standing after the season.
Elkweed can spend twenty to eighty years as a low cluster of leaves, storing everything in a thick root. Then it sends up one stalk, flowers once, sets seed, and dies — and its neighbors do it the same year, for reasons nobody has pinned down. This is the only bloom that plant ever had.
